About the Vermont Lottery

The Vermont Lottery hit the scene in 1978, debuting with the Green Mountain Game. A few months later, the first instant game ticket Scratch ‘N Match went on sale, and in 1980 the first online game, Pick 3, was added to the mix.

For the first twenty years, profits were dedicated for use by the state’s General Fund. However, from July 1998 it was mandated that all profits go to the state’s Education Fund.

Vermont Lottery Rules

• Players must be 18 years or older to purchase lottery tickets;

Vermont Lottery Tickets

Vermont Lottery tickets are available from licensed retailers and cannot be bought over the internet. For Powerball, Megabucks and Mega Millions only, subscriptions of 26, 52 or 104 can be purchased through the mail but only from a Vermont mailing address.

Winning Vermont Lottery tickets are valid for one year from draw date, game end date or purchase date, dependent on the game.

Can I buy VT Lottery tickets online?

Vermont Lottery tickets are not available for sale via the internet. The Vermont Lottery website instead provides all the latest winning numbers and promotions available. Tickets can be bought from licensed retailers — or for specific games, players can buy subscriptions through the mail.

Vermont Lottery Games and Drawing Schedule

Pick 3

Select a play type: Straight, Box, Front Pair, Back Pair or Single Digit and pick the draw time: Day, Evening or Both. Pick the amount to bet from $0.50 to $5 and choose from 0 to 9 — one number for a Single Digit play, two for Front Pair or Back Pair and three numbers for Straight or Box play.

Pick 4

Select a play type: Straight, Box, Front Pair, Middle Pair, Back Pair or Single Digit and pick the draw time: Day, Evening or Both. Pick the amount to bet from $0.50 to $5 and choose from 0 to 9 — one number for a Single Digit play, two for Front Pair, Middle Pair or Back Pair and four numbers for Straight or Box play.

Powerball

Choose five numbers from 1–69 and the Powerball from 1–26. Tickets cost $2 per play with a cut-off time of 9:50pm (ET) to purchase tickets. Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

For an additional $1, players can add the Power Play option. Non-jackpot prizes may be multiplied by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x.

Mega Millions

To start playing Mega Millions, choose five numbers from 1–70 and the Mega Ball from 1–25. Mega Millions tickets cost $2 per play and drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday evening with a cut-off time of 9:50pm (ET) to purchase tickets.

For an additional $1, players can add the Megaplier option which will multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x.

Lucky For Life

Choose five numbers from 1–48 and the Lucky Ball from 1–18. Tickets cost $2 per play with a jackpot prize of $1,000 a day for life and second prize of $25,000 per year for life. Draws are held daily with a cut-off time of 9:30pm (ET) for ticket purchases.

Tri-State Megabucks

Choose five numbers from 1–41 and the Mega Ball from 1–6. Tri-State Megabucks tickets cost $2 per play and drawings are every Wednesday and Saturday evening with a cut-off time of 7:50pm (ET) for ticket purchases.

Gimme 5

Choose five numbers from 1–39, tickets cost $1 per play with a jackpot prize of $100,000. Drawings are held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings with a cut-off time of 6:45pm (ET) for purchasing tickets.

How to Claim a Lottery Prize in Vermont

1. The winning ticket must be signed on the back by the claimant;
2. Prizes of $499 or less After confirming Vermont lottery results, winnings can be claimed at Vermont Lottery Headquarters or at any authorized Vermont Lottery Agent;
3. Prizes of $500 to $5,000 After confirming Vermont lottery results, winnings can be claimed at Vermont Lottery Headquarters or at any People’s United Bank located in Vermont;

Vermont Tax Information

Vermont Lottery is required to withhold 24% Federal Income Tax and 6% Vermont State Income Tax from prize winnings of $5,000 or over. For winners who are unable to provide a taxpayer identification number (TIN), these same taxes will be applied.

The Vermont Lottery will issue a W-2G form every January to all winners of $600 or more on a single ticket from the previous calendar year.

Non-residents of VT are eligible to play Vermont Lottery games but are subject to Federal Income Tax of 30% and Vermont State Income Tax of 7.2% on winnings $600 or more and will be issued with a 1042-S form for all lottery winnings of more than $600 from the preceding year.
